This study explores the use of a web-based digital tool as an alternative to the traditional Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST) to capture students’ conceptions of biologists and their work. The DAST, while widely used, has been criticised for its reliance on drawing skills, which may affect validity. Digital tools offer a solution that potentially bypasses the need for drawing abilities, for example, by allowing students to create comic-like representations of scientists and their work environments. In this study, we used the web-based software Pixton as an alternative to the DAST and investigated the following aspects: the possibility of validly interpreting student-produced pictures in capturing their conceptions of biologists, technical difficulties students encounter while using the digital tool, and language difficulties for non-English speaking students arising from the use of the English-based software. Thirty-one students (grades 6, 7, and 11) participated, and their pictures were analysed alongside data from think-aloud protocols. Findings indicate that student-generated pictures can be validly analysed, though some students encountered technical challenges, particularly with the user interface. Language difficulties were minimal and easily addressed. This study highlights the potential of digital tools in educational research but emphasises the need for preparatory exercises.
