Biology Education

Research in the IPN's Department of Biology Education explores fundamental matters around the teaching and learning of biology across learners' lifespans and examines issues that arise with the incorporation into educational contexts of new knowledge in biology.

The Department’s conceptual and empirical research is dedicated to considering how education can nurture skills in the field of biology, from elementary education to the conclusion of secondary schooling and additionally via extracurricular programs. We also carry out studies on the transfer of emerging knowledge in biology and conduct research into biology teacher education.

The Department is involved in running the International Biology Olympiad, the National Environment Competition (BUW), and the European Olympiad of Experimental Science. A further aspect of our commitment to supporting young scientists is the events we hold for school classes and teachers on current issues in the life sciences; these take place in the life:lab at the Kiel Science Outreach Lab.
