The IPN

Welcome to the website of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel, Germany! Here you will find general information about the institute.

The IPN conducts basic and applied research on issues related to learning and teaching of science, mathematics, and - since 2022 - computer science in and outside of schools. It concentrates its nationwide activities on projects of special interest to the federal and state governments and which cannot be carried out by the universities.

News

Research and operations at the IPN Kiel never stand still. In the Current section we therefore inform about current developments at the institute as well as from the world of educational research. This includes news in which we summarize new developments briefly and clearly, information on upcoming events as well as an overview of the latest publications in which IPN scientists are involved. In addition, we present the IPN Journal, which is published at regular intervals and provides insights into the IPN's current research projects.

About Us

Research for Society - With this motto, the IPN is dedicated to empowering people to participate professionally, culturally and socially. This mission is described in detail in the About Us section. As an institute of the Leibniz Association, the IPN can look back at a history of more than 50 years, which we would like to present as well. We also show how the institute is currently organized and introduce committees and areas at the IPN that support this research mission.

Departments

The interdisciplinarity of the IPN and its research topics is reflected in the fact that research is conducted in seven departments at the institute. In addition, there are the areas of administration and scientific services, which support scientific operations. In the section Departments, each department of the IPN presents itself individually and informs about current projects and topics. You will also get an insight into the people behind our research.
