Welcome to the website of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel, Germany. Here you will find general information about the Institute.

The IPN conducts basic and applied research on topics around the learning and teaching of the sciences and mathematics within and outside of schools; it added the teaching and learning of computer science to its research remit in 2022. It centers its nationwide activities on projects that are in the public interest at federal or state level and that Germany’s higher education institutions are unable to carry out.

Here at the IPN, new research and new ideas are emerging all the time. Our website’s Announcements section reports on current developments at the Institute and in the world of education research. You’ll find brief details of upcoming events and an overview of the most recent publications authored or co-authored by IPN researchers.

About Us

True to its mission and motto of conducting “Research for Society,” the IPN, as a member institute of the Leibniz Association, is committed, in all its work, to enabling people to access occupational, cultural and social opportunities. Visit the About Us section of our website to find out more about this mission and how we seek to fulfill it, and about our history, which spans more than half a century. You’ll also find details of our institute’s organizational structure and of the committees and departments, bodies and working groups that support the IPN’s research mission.

The IPN conducts its research within seven departments, reflecting its interdisciplinary character. None of this work would be possible without our administrative and support services departments. Our website’s Departments section gives brief details of each department, its current work, and the people behind the research.
