This article makes suggestions and gives detailed instructions to improve once customary teaching experiments with bromine, chromates and lead compounds. Optimized implementation, replacement with potassium permanganate or tartrates and precipitation with copper and silver ions reduce the risk of danger and are still meaningful and clear. In addition, a common misunderstanding is clarified concerning azo dyes: tyrosine and histidine (Pauly sample) are allowed!
