Competences and how they can be supported by teachung and by teachers are in the focus of this article. In a nine years period, the SINUS programs for elementary schools offered systematic professional trainings. The article shows how the programs enhanced competence oriented teaching. It points out the professional development individual teachers noticed. It reports on the gains on the competence levels which students from SINUS schools made compared to a control group of students from other schools.
