For lactose detection there is a relatively unknown detection reaction which was carried out in early 20th century Europe in three different versions.
For the interested reader, research into the history of chemistry spans an area from Copenhagen and Innsbruck to St. Petersburg and Dublin, accompanied by multiple links to other areas of science.
All variants of the experiment are easily replicable in chemistry education with simple and safe methods as well as clear instructions.
