In this contribution, we discuss how interactions in the classroom may influence girls’ and boys’ motivation to take up a science-related career indirectly through fostering interests and self-concepts, but also directly in different ways. We test expected effects in a sample of German ninth-grade students (Nstudents = 11382, Nclasses = 887). The multi-level path-analyses show that illustrating applications in science classes and intensive discussions are important factors for students’ motivation. The results of the research are important for understanding how students’ motivation in science and interest in science-related careers can be fostered.
