Future School in the Digital Age was launched in the fall of 2021 by the Ministry of General Education and Vocational Training, Science, Research and Culture (MBWFK) of the State of Schleswig-Holstein as a statewide, permanent support program for all phases of teacher education. Through the collaboration of all the institutes involved in teacher education in Schleswig-Holstein — the two state institutes, the four teacher-training universities, and the IPN — the state program supports the development of competencies in students and pre- and in-service teachers for teaching and learning in a culture shaped by digitalization.

The program’s objective goes beyond the mere use of digital media in the classroom or the exclusive promotion of digital literacy and adopts a holistic perspective on teaching and learning in the context of digital transformation. It not only addresses all phases of teacher education, all types of schools, and all subject areas in general and vocational education; it also focuses on subject-specific and cross-curricular competencies and topics in addition to those related to digitalization.

The work at the IPN focuses on three areas.

1. Promoting process- and content-related subject-specific, interdisciplinary, and digital competencies in STEM subjects

In collaboration with colleagues at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, Kiel University, and the Institute for Quality Development in Schools Schleswig-Holstein, research-based support programs for pre- and in-service teachers and students are being developed, tested, and implemented. At the IPN, research focuses, amongst other things, on topics such as the digital collection of measurement data, visualizations, ESD, citizen science, fundamental concepts in chemistry, and AI.

2. The development and support of educational media at the intersection of school, academia, the workplace, and society

In addition to producing media content for subject-specific and cross-curricular support programs, a key focus in this area is the development of practical resources for career guidance and for fostering digital, technical, and entrepreneurial skills (in cooperation with the Open Campus). In this context, networking across schools and the involvement of out-of-school practitioners play a central role.

3. Formative program evaluation and investigation of transfer

Work in this area supports the program through the (further) development and implementation of concepts, models, and formats for formative evaluation and knowledge transfer, e.g., through the continuation of the STePS student panel in cooperation with the Allianz für Lehrkräftebildung (Alliance for Teacher Education).
