The IPN welcomes Prof. Dr. Bettina Rösken-Winter as new head of its Department of Subject-Related Knowledge Transfer

The mathematics educationalist Prof. Dr. Bettina Rösken-Winter has taken up the interim headship of the IPN’s Department of Subject-Related Knowledge Transfer. She will hold the position for a period of at least one year, until the appointment process for the shared professorship associated with the role, based at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, is complete.

The IPN has welcomed Prof. Dr. Bettina Rösken-Winter as the new head of its Department of Subject-Related Knowledge Transfer (Fachbezogener Erkenntnistransfer, FET) as of October 2026. Prof. Rösken-Winter, who holds a doctorate in mathematics education, took up a professorship of mathematics education, focusing on the primary level, at the University of Münster in 2024. She is also a founder member and deputy director of the German Centre for Mathematics Teacher Education (DZLM) and one of the scientific leads of the QuaMath program. She works principally on developing, researching, and implementing effective CPD and support for mathematics teachers and teacher educators.

“We feel that Bettina Rösken-Winter is the ideal person to lead the Department of Subject-Related Knowledge Transfer for the interim period until the conclusion of the appointment process for the Humboldt-Universität professorship associated with the role. Her proven expertise in research around professional development and knowledge transfer stands alongside her long track record in creating and realizing evidence-based CPD and training for mathematics teaching. We are very much looking forward to working with her to keep pushing forward with subject-related knowledge transfer, in the sciences as well as in math,” said Prof. Dr. Olaf Köller, the IPN’s Managing Director of Research.

The DZLM, initiated 15 years ago by the Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, became part of the IPN’s portfolio of inter-institutional projects in 2021, coming under the aegis of the FET department. Within a network of 29 professors from a total of 14 German higher education institutions plus the IPN, the DZLM conducts research and development activities around ways of supporting teachers, early years educators, and teacher/educator trainers in the subject of mathematics. Its two major Germany-wide projects QuaMath and the Startchancen Mathematics Competency Center are particularly fitting examples of how the many years of expertise in professional development research held collectively by the members of the DZLM network come together with a broad practical experience base drawn from the support systems in place in Germany’s federal states.

Bettina Rösken-Winter is excited for her upcoming activities in FET: “I’ve been working successfully with some of my IPN colleagues, particularly in the FET department, for some years now. I feel the department’s focus and its structure incorporating the DZLM network are really very special and lay essential foundations for striding ahead with subject-related knowledge transfer and with research into how it works. I’ve arrived at the IPN with a bunch of new ideas, and I’m looking forward to joining with my IPN colleagues on research and development around knowledge transfer, increasing its breadth and depth.”
