The check of substitute substances and the check of substitute procedures are essential tools for the risk assessment. They are mandatory for chemistry teachers to adapt their experimental chemistry lessons to current requirements that may arise from changed technical conditions, changed learning groups, or stricter GHS classifications of substances. In this work, traditional experiments (e.g. the “sinking ship”) with polystyrene (PS) are used to demonstrate how highly flammable, teratogenic and neurotoxic solvents can be exchanged by less dangerous solvents. The safety in experimental chemistry lessons can be increased by such substitution check. In addition students may perform the experiments by their own and this increases their motivation to deal with scientific procedures.
