In this article, we present the construction and first validation of a short questionnaire for two components of computer motivation on the basis of the social-cognitive theory of Internet usage. The questionnaire is conceptualized for use in large-scale studies as an outcome variable or to predict computer use or computer-related skills. Data from a study in the context of the German National Educational Panel Study (N = 462) support the conceptual distinction of the constructs and confirm the psychometric properties of the newly constructed scale. Moreover, partial measurement invariance across gender and age was established. Aspects of construct validity were explored via correlations with computer-related variables (e. g., skills) and personality constructs (e. g., need for cognition).
