The relevance of mathematical and scientific competences for the development of subject-specific competences in commercial technical jobs

This contribution gives an overview of the evidence we have about mathematical and scientific competencies and their influence on the development of professional competencies in vocational-technical professions. Additionally, we present what is known about the respective competence levels and the development of mathematical and scientific competencies during the course of vocational education. Based on the example of two vocational-technical professions, it is shown that the high predictive validity of mathematical competencies for the development of professional competencies is even observed when the professional tasks do not require mathematical skills. Finally, the implications of this result are discussed.
