Bromine accidents at schools are especially spectacular when a big contingent of rescue forces arrives with flashing lights and sirens on the schoolyard. Is elementary bromine really necessary for good chemistry education? The article gives an overview from the detection of bromine by A.J. Balard in 1826 till nowadays safety requirements.
