In this paper, we inquire whether motivation profiles of computer use can be discerned by using a latent profile analysis. Six scales of computer-related incentives on the basis of the social-cognitive theory of media attendance were used to measure computer motivation. To establish external validity of the types differences among them in computer skills and social status were analyzed. On the basis of data collected among N = 2075 adolescents who took part in ICILS (International Computer and Information Literacy Study) 2013 five types could be identified: Instrumental users, instrumental users & hedonists, all-rounders, socially-interactive hedonists, and average users. Instrumental users and instrumental users & hedonists on the one hand, and all-rounders and socially-interactive hedonists on the other hand differ in their computer skills and their social status. The computer skills as well as the social status of the average users were in accordance with their label unobtrusively.
