This study examines the extent to which textbooks used in mathematics lessons with the same curriculum affect the development of arithmetic proficiency in elementary school students. The studies are based on a longitudinal dataset of 1664 students from 93 classes collected over the four years of German elementary school. The studies will build on general differences between the classes - depending on the textbook used - to examine in particular the subject-specific quality of the textbooks and empirically test their learning effectiveness using the data set. Criteria of textbook quality determined using this method can serve as reference points for textbook research and textbook development as well as for quality assurance at elementary school.
