We define the students’ career choice motives in this context as the interests, orientations, and motivations prompting them to aspire to the teaching profession. Because particular motivational profiles of prospective teachers, such as strong intrinsic motivation, provide a robust basis for success in the individual’s educational and professional journey, the motives underlying career choice are regarded as material to the motivational component of teachers’ professional competencies.
To date, few subject-specific studies have taken place on the motives behind the career choices of active or prospective teachers. Earlier findings in this area have limited validity due to the influence on career-related motivations exerted by factors such as changes in entry requirements to the profession in response to issues including teacher shortages or shifting perceptions of teachers and teaching.
