Even at the beginning of secondary schooling, many students rely on their parents’ support when doing their homework. Some of these students do at least parts of their homework during private tutoring lessons. The quality of parental homework support can be described by the dimensions responsiveness, structure, and control. This model was adapted to homework support during private tutoring lessons. A sample of N = 1490 students from grade 5 to grade 9 rated the quality of their parents’ homework support, a subsample (n = 204) additionally rated the quality of homework support during private tutoring lessons. There was no global positive effect of homework support during private tutoring on students’ homework-related study behaviour or grades. Structural equation modelling revealed a positive effect of structure provided by parents or private tutors and a negative effect of control on students’ homework behaviour. We recommend instructing and training parents and private tutors on effective forms of homework support.
